Family History Begins Now!

I have been wanting to start a blog for a while but have wondered where the extra time will found to actually do it. I have been waiting for that extra time...it had never arrived. After talking with my visiting teacher about family blogs, I have decided to do it. I hope to post pictures of our family's day to day life, activities, homeschooling adventures and great moments. The kids are going up so fast and I don't want to look back and say, "Gee, I really wished I would have written stuff down while they were growing up!" So this is my attempt. Stay tuned to see what pops up. :)

Nightwear Switcharoo

Tonight hubby got the kids ready for bed. They came bouncing in wearing not their usual clothes, really excited about something. They were wearing each others PJs. So Caleb was in a cupcake nightgown and Addison in his Mickey Mouse jammies. It was a pretty funny sight. When I asked Caleb how he was going to go to the bathroom later that night with a night gown on, he showed me how he wold do it, with sound effects. It was hilarious! Dane and I couldn't stop snickering.I will have to get a picture of them in the morning...that is if they will cooperate. :0

Memorial Weekend Update

We had an eventful Memorial Weekend, last weekend. Our family took off to the Oregon coast Saturday morning to go camping! We stayed at the Boy Scout Camp right on the coast called Camp Meriweather-Clark. We stayed in 3 walled shacks that had two wooden bunk beds. It was actually decent. Better than a tent I think, unless there were misquitos, then a tent would have come in handy. But the only pests we had were chipmunks and Blue Jays. They didn't pester us in there much. We shared the nearby shacks with another family and there kids. So Addison and Caleb had fun running around with them, looking for slugs, playing hide-and-seek and just exploring the environment around them. They had a blast. They got dirty and wet. But they had a blast.

The highlight of Saturday was taking the kids to see the ocean for the first time. You would think since we live not too far away from the coast, that we would have taken them many times. But no, we hadn't, so they were both excited.  They dug in the sand, took off their shoes and wiggled their toes in it, chased the surf, buried their feet in the sand, and in the end, got extremely sandy! Addy got her pants wet, so we had to take them off, she hates wet pants! Thankfully the beach was private and hardly anyone around. Sooo...what they hay. Caleb joined her in her pant-less pursuits later when he too got wet. In fact, Caleb got so wet, he had to take his shirt off and where Addy's coat, so he wouldn't get too cold. It was not very warm out. In fact, I think it was around 55 F. But the kids didn't seem too notice, they were having too much fun playing around with Daddy. I hung back and took pictures. I had to protect the camera, and I don't care for the sand nor getting wet by the frigid ocean.

We cleaned up and headed back to camp to cook up our dinner. The kids had fun roasting marshmallows and eating them. Caleb liked them unroasted. They eventually went to bed, tired and worn out. Which is why they probably slept as well as they did on the top bunks, one on each. I feared that I would have to take Addy to the outhouse in the middle of the night, but luckily that didn't happen. They slept pretty good. I was the one who didn't sleep too well. I was uncomfortable and worried that the kids would be too cold. I was up checking on them at least 4 times that night. Caleb did have a hard time sleeping in his sleeping bag, it was always more under him than anything. Morning came and we awoke and started to fix our breakfast. I felt like an old woman upon waking, for my back hurt so bad. I've had issues with my back since having kids and I know that sleeping on my back and/or on hard surfaces only makes the problem worse. It certainly did. But it worked itself out later in the morning. We spent the day exploring the camp and played some games in the lodge. The real fun began when we headed back to camp for dinner later that night.
The rain moved in Sunday night, which was good timing because we weren't at our camp. We were in the ER. Dane mistook his knee for a piece of wood and hacked into it. Okay, it was an accident, the sharp hatchet glanced off the piece of wood and got him right in the knee. I was momentarily in shock, I didn't know what to do. Dane finally told be, "Well you better get something to stop the bleeding!" I ran up to the shack and grabbed some paper towels, kitchen towels and a tie down thing. Of course, the first aid kit I brought was safely in the car about 3/4 of a mile away. I got the towels on his leg and wrapped the tie down thing around his leg, working like a belt. I then grabbed the keys and ran to get the car. On my way I was thinking, "I should have sat him down on the ground. He might pass out and hurt himself even further. And the kids! They would freak out!" I started to run a little faster!

Well, in the end, I drive him and the kids to the ER in the next town over and got him stitched up after waiting around for about 2 hours in the ER. He ended up with 5 stitches, and if you ask me, it could have used some more.

On a positive note, we were able to see the Cape Meares Lighthouse. Addy wanted to see one so bad, an we saw the sign for it on the way back. She got her wish. It was cool

We made it back for a late dinner and bed. The kids once again were bushed, as were we. Caleb however, didn't fare so well that night. He woke up around 2:30am (I am guessing since I had a hard time reading my watch in the dark of night). I got up with him several times to put him back to sleep. But he kept on sitting up and leaning over the bunk bed and staring into the dark camp. He wasn't crying, but I could tell he was scared. So I finally asked him if he wanted to sleep with me. Of course he did. So we squeezed together, him in his sleeping bag, myself in mine. He finally went to sleep after a little while and slept until late the next morning. And boy was he sleeping hard. I was able to make breakfast the next morning right by his head and he didn't even stir!! I wish he slept that hard and long in the mornings all the time!

Addy found a salamander that morning and was inseparable from it, until it escaped it's cup while we weren't looking. We found tons more when we went exploring the lake later that morning. They were everywhere. I cringe at the thought of swimming in that lake with those all round me. Ick.

We made our way home by 4pm Monday, with minimal traffic. I started to unpack the coolers and start the mountain of wet dirty laundry. Dane was a sweetie and cleaned out the car, even vacuuming it! Afterwords he disappeared and I found him starting on the chicken coop. (We got 4 baby chicks at Easter time and they were quickly outgrowing their temporary pen in the shed!) We had picked up the needed materials on our way home and he went right to work. I stopped what I was doing in the house and gave him a hand outside. We got most of it done that night. My vision of having the kids in bed by 7:30pm were dashed. I think they got to bed by 10pm instead. But we got the coop mostly done! I finished it up the next morning. Now are chickens are happy in their new home. However, my home...was still a mess. And stayed that way for what seemed like all week. I could not catch up. Still trying!
